"... easy to recommend... Segal brings all the experience and enthusiasm one could hope for in a school board candidate. In addition to bringing her perspective as an English teacher and a commitment to improve the district's English language curriculum so it serves all learners, she is a strong advocate for greater transparency and better communication with parents before decisions are made."

"Shana Segal is a breath of fresh air for the school board. She combines the experience of a teacher and a parent. Within a few minutes of meeting her, you realize that she would be a good fit. ... Being both a teacher and parent of children in PAUSD gives her insights others lack. It should be noted that she has a great attitude that will lead to cooperation on the board and when it comes to how the board works with parents. There aren't many candidates like Segal. She's a gem that voters are lucky to have on the ballot."

- Daily Post endorsement

"... Segal’s experience teaching and time both as a student and parent in the district gives her valuable insight into making informed decisions for the benefit of the district. With over 10 years of experience as a teacher in the San Jose Unified School District and substitute at PAUSD, we believe the experience and unique teacher perspective that Segal brings would greatly benefit the district and the board. ... Ultimately, Segal’s motto “Experience Matters” encapsulates her credibility, which stems from her intimate knowledge of the district and Palo Alto community, and we believe that she will bring a well-informed perspective to the board."

In their words...

Shana brings an exceptional background to our Board; local student, teacher, parent, education expert, and school volunteer. Her experience and insights will help all of our students thrive.

Pat Burt

Mayor of Palo Alto, Palo Alto City Council

Getting to know Shana is a breathe of fresh air; she is authentic, knowledgeable and action oriented. Shana has been a teacher for over 10 years and she knows what she is talking about when it comes to children's education. But, most relevant is her top priority: differentiation, a philosophy of teaching rooted in acknowledging each child's differences and to help all students thrive.

Being a teacher, who knows education and interacts with students, and a parent, Shana cares and hears both sides. Everyone wants the best for their children, and Shana wants the best for all the students too. Please vote with me for Shana Segal for PAUSD Board Trustee.

Lydia Kou

Vice Mayor, City of Palo Alto

I've seen Shana in action and I'm impressed with her knowledge, dedication and spirit. She's authentic with deep knowledge of childhood education at a wide range of ages. She knows our school district and has historical context in Palo Alto. I'm happy to support her for the school board.

Tom DuBois

City Council Member and Former Mayor of City of Palo Alto

Shana's experience, education, and deep-rooted knowledge of PAUSD as a former student, current parent, and education consultant, makes her the perfect addition to the School Board. As a former JLS, Gunn, and Paly teacher myself, I value Shana's experience as a teacher and her concrete understanding of the issues facing educators in today's classroom.

Shana's primary interest is helping all students achieve success. She intends to support all students by prioritizing differentiation within the curriculum and offering the resources necessary for teachers to ensure all students achieve success. Shana not only will focus on academic excellence, but also balancing high academic standards with mental health and equity concerns.

Join me in my enthusiastic support for Shana Segal.

Greer Stone

Palo Alto City Council Member/Educator

As a Professor of Education at the Stanford University, Graduate School of Education, I am delighted to see an educator run for the PAUSD Board of Education. Shana’s experience and informed knowledge about educational practices will benefit many of our more marginalized students while also celebrating the accomplishment of all PAUSD students.

Amado M Padilla

Palo Alto Unified School District Board President and Trustee (Former); Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs & Professor, Graduate School of Education, Stanford University

Shana is a breath of fresh air--authentic, committed, and passionate about students, families, and educators. She has deep experience and knowledge of education and school districts and, as a graduate of PAUSD schools, she and her family are long-time members of the Palo Alto community. Shana will prioritize equity for all students and I highly recommend her for the Palo Alto School Board.

Heidi Emberling

Palo Alto Unified School District Board President and Trustee (former); Interim CPO at First 5 Santa Clara County

Shana has it all. She's a teacher. She knows Palo Alto, its community and its schools. Shana attended and graduated from Palo Alto's Schools. We could not be more fortunate to have such a knowledgeable member of our Board of Trustees. I look forward to voting for Shana in November. I hope you do, too.

Alan Davis

Palo Alto Unified School District Board President and Trustee (former)

I’ve only heard the best about Shana Segal! After meeting her at her campaign kickoff, I could tell she was a passionate, welcoming, and approachable person who would work for the better of the community. I am so glad to see a candidate that advocates for students and is willing to hear our concerns :)

Johannah Seah

Paly PAUSD Student Board Representative 22-23

Shana is exactly who we need on our school board. She is a parent of young children in PAUSD schools, a former public high school teacher who understands teaching and learning, and a longtime Palo Alto resident deeply invested in making our schools a place where all children will thrive. As a PAUSD elementary teacher of over 20 years, I am thrilled that we have such a solid and qualified candidate running for our school board. Join me in supporting her and our children!

Christina Nosek

PAUSD Elementary Teacher & Education Author

Shana is a dream candidate for the Palo Alto School Board. Her experience alone in our community as a PAUSD staff member, PAUSD parent, PAUSD alumni, and community school consultant check all the boxes. Shana has a strong connection with parents as well as staff in our district. Shana is passionate about student well being both emotionally and academically.
After speaking at length with Shana about various topics ranging from student inclusion and equity, social/emotional needs, to the need for staff pay increases, I am confident she will be a beacon of hope for our school community. She represents staff, parents, and students in our district during a time where many of us don’t feel heard or validated. Please join me in supporting Shana Segal for Palo Alto School Board.

Jessica Clark

PAUSD Classroom Aide/Substitute, PAUSD Parent, PAUSD Alumni, Affordable Housing Advocate

I particularly appreciate how much Shana understands about our schools at this particular time. This is due in no small part to the fact that she has children enrolled in our schools and is able to learn from her children, fellow parents, and school staff.

Mary Pat O'Connell

Retired PAUSD elementary principal

As the former PAUSD District Nurse for 26 years, it is refreshing to have a bright, experienced teacher and advocate who will stand up for excellent education and the physical and mental well-being of OUR students!

Linda Lenoir

RN, BSN, MSN, CNS, PHN

Beyond Shana's clear credentials for the job she is seeking, she is a fearless person who is not afraid to go in and get the job done.

One of many examples: When the district was short substitutes last year, Shana stood up every time when needed and went into the classrooms when teachers and/or their family members were ill.

She leads by example.
She does the hard work.
What else can we ask for?

Jennifer Aza Allan

PAUSD Teacher

I have lived in Palo Alto a long time and retired from PAUSD after working there many years. I think you would be a great addition to the Board. I love that you have young kids in the district, live in the midtown area, grew up attending District schools AND you have experience teaching in a public school! Perfect combination in my opinion. Wishing you the best.

Sharon Keplinger

Former PAUSD Principal for 20+ years and early education expert. 2015 Tall Tree Awards' "Outstanding Professional/Business Person."

Shana's advocacy for student mental health and wellness is crucial to have on the board in this day and age considering the accelerating pressures that students and parents face. She brings a valuable perspective from being a long-time resident of Palo Alto, a student and now a parent in PAUSD, and a teacher in a top Santa Clara County high school.

Carolyn Williams

Former: PAUSD School Volunteer at Escondido, Jordan (Greene) schools, and Gunn. Council Director of Parent Ed, Students. Parent of 2 PAUSD Alums

Shana is a values-driven candidate who is running for the right reasons. She wants every child to have opportunities to excel, she supports educators, and she cares about Palo Alto schools. I support her candidacy wholeheartedly.

Jennifer Abrams

Former English Teacher, Gunn High, Current Communications Consultant

I've had the pleasure of knowing Shana for several years and believe that she is eminently qualified for the PAUSD school board. Her years as a teacher, substitute teacher, educational consultant and PAUSD parent allow her a unique and invaluable perspective. Additionally, her desire to meet students where they are and help them balance the demands of school and life can make an important difference for Palo Alto's young people. I appreciate her thoughtfulness, humility, transparency and dedication. She has my vote and I hope she has yours, too!

Todd Erickson

Head Teacher, Bing Nursery School, Stanford University

We need members of the Palo Alto School Board who have been Palo Alto students, teachers, and parents of students. Such a candidate understands the needs of students, teachers, and parents. Shana is all three. Vote for Shana.

Natalie Krauss Bivas

Former PAUSD reading and ELD specialist and parent of two PAUSD Gunn graduates

Shana has her finger on the pulse of our parent-teacher-student community and knows what is happening in PAUSD. She has the diplomacy and integrity to advocate for what she thinks is right. She would be a fantastic school board member!

Bryna Chang

PAUSD Parent, Former Gunn Site Council member, and former JLS and Hoover Site Council Co-Chair

I’ve known Shana for years and worked with her as a parent in our preschool program and a professional as a school consultant. She knows our community, our schools, and has the educational background and experience to be the powerful addition we need on the school board. She is invested in Palo Alto and sees that there are challenges and opportunities for improvement. She also believes in honest communication, transparency, learning by listening and the value of collaboration.

My children attended PAUSD and benefitted from access to innovative and thoughtfully designed programs, through both special education and regular education. Unfortunately, many of those programs have been cut. We need to restore the opportunity for differentiated instruction for our all of our students, empower teachers and work together. Shana believes in PAUSD schools and so do I! She has my vote!

Carrie Jeffries

Retired Director of First Congo Nursery School

I was immensely privileged to be a student in Shana’s English class ten years ago. The impact she had on my life as an educator was profound, instilling within me, then an incredibly insecure and lost teenager, courage and self-confidence and challenging me to take risks within and beyond the walls of her classroom. Not only has she remained a mentor and friend in the past decade, but I have seen her become an incredible mom to two amazing children. She is tremendously empathetic and has every child’s and student’s best interests at heart, and her character and integrity make her compellingly qualified.

Sunny Wu

Lynbrook High School ‘15, Stanford University ‘19

Mrs. Segal is the definition of love, kindness, and patience. Although I was not one of the most active nor the brightest student in her class. The year that she taught me has created a tremendous impact and left an everlasting impression on me. She has taught me honesty and hardwork are important values not just in school but of life.

With Mrs. Segal's credential, experience, and personal values. She will no doubt create more than a positive impact to the school board and in the community as a whole.

Ben Pai

Lynbrook 2010 Former Student of Mrs. Segal

Shana is a tireless advocate for public education, for meeting the needs of all students and would be a tremendous asset to the Palo Alto School Board. Her background as a Palo Verde parent, a high school teacher and PAUSD Substitute, and as a former PAUSD student gives her the deep knowledge and perspective needed to represent Palo Alto families - whether they are brand new to the area or have been here for a generation or more.

Rebecca Thompson

Current Gunn Parent, former Gunn Foundation Board Member, Community and School Volunteer

Shana is such a great choice for school board. She has the trifecta of being a PAUSD graduate, current PAUSD parent, and an experienced teacher. What a great combination of experience!

Jane Millman

PAUSD Teacher (retired), Mom to 2 Paly alums, long-time Palo Alto resident

Shana is wonderful to work with. She is organized and proactive, an effective, compassionate and honest communicator, and she gets things done. She is passionate and knowledgeable about education, has deep roots in this community and yet welcomes newcomers and change with an open mind and heart.

Janel Moses

Language Teacher, Palo Alto Business Owner and Former PAUSD Parent

As a pediatric nurse, and mother of three, I understand how vitally important schools are for a child’s physical and mental well-being. I support Shana because of her experience as an educator and a mother, as well as her vision for the future of PAUSD, where kids are happy, healthy, and ready to rise to the challenge. I fully trust her to set a path that will prepare our children to tackle the current, and future, issues they may encounter with confidence and grace.

Rachaell Mondino

Registered Nurse, PAUSD School Volunteer

I have relished connecting with Shana in various ways through the different hats we each wear. She is committed and thoughtful, as a community leader, as a parent, as well as schools expert extraordinaire. I have every confidence she will serve this community with every ounce of her being.

Rowena Chiu

Palo Alto Parent & Community Leader

Shana is truly amazing and whole heartedly believes in and devoted to the Palo Alto public schools. As a (previous) school admission counselor, she could have her children admitted to any private schools. However, she had them attend local public elementary school, herself also extremely actively participated in the PTA as well as served as a substitute teacher for the classes, she also frequently organized students and parents social events to build a stronger community. When our campus in Palo Verde needs to temporarily relocate, she voices out to advocate for families’ benefits and offer a grand vision in optimizing the resources for a smoother transition. My two children are in the same grade as hers, so I can highly relate to her selfless involvement. We are lucky to have Shana! Please vote for her!

Wen Guo

PAUSD Parent

Shana was a teacher and knows what our students and teachers need. She has been in the classroom, understands educational issues' complexities, and will be a great advocate for our students.

Teri Baldwin

Teacher/PAEA President

My wife and I raised three children in PAUSD and care deeply about the future of our community. Shana cares about all children and does not come with any agenda except to make our district the best it can be.

Michael Fogarty

Retired Physician

Shana is motivated to do right for ALL children, parents & staff. She has the knowledge and experience because she has been a teacher, she attended school all the way through in PAUSD & now her own 2 kids are currently enrolled in PAUSD. Vote for Shana!

Nancy & Jim Baer

Parents of 2 PAUSD alumni; Leadership Mid Peninsula alumni & current local Preschool teacher

I’ve known Shana Segal for many years, and I wholeheartedly support her candidacy for the PAUSD School Board. As a K-12 and community college educator for over 30 years, I recognize in Shana the skills necessary to build on the successes and enact positive change for the Palo Alto School District. Her experience as a student, teacher, parent and involved community member/consultant gives her a unique perspective on the diverse needs of students, parents and school personnel. Shana has lifelong roots in the Palo Alto community. She has demonstrated her skills as a creative problem solver, combining knowledge-based ideals with boots-on-the-ground energy. The PAUSD would be fortunate to have Shana Segal on their Board.

Barbara Smith

Educator

I’m really excited to see Shana run for the school board. I had met her at some events in Palo Alto. I was very impressed with her breadth and depth of knowledge when it comes to childhood education. She is very honest and has good ethics. She has developed a vast knowledge base of different schools and current trends in education after working with several schools and parents. PAUSD will benefit immensely with her expertise on the board.

Akshaya Aradhya

Tech Exec, PAUSD parent

Am excited to join this campaign and provide my endorsement. I hope to create viable partnerships in the schools to educate youth on aging, lifestyle changes, cognitive skills and brain health, family caregiving resources.

Paula E. Wolfson

LCSW, Intergenerational Care Consultant

I am very excited to support Shana Segal for PAUSD

Heidi G. Lerner

Parent of PAUSD Alums

I know Shana through my son’s elementary school where she was a room parent and substitute teacher. She has consistently shown that she cares about PAUSD and the students. She works to communicate well with all administrators and teachers. She has my full support.

Anne Sinha

PAUSD Parent

I am impressed by Shana's determination to create a school district that does even more to help all our children succeed.

Hal Plotkin

Former President, Foothill-De Anza Community College District Governing Board of Trustees

Shana is the best candidate for the challenges PAUSD is facing - from declining enrollment to underachieving minority students. I am convinced that Shana will act on objective evidence, and consider the needs of all students. As a parent of three PAUSD students, and former/current Site Council/PTA/room parent/coach volunteer, I am happy to endorse Shana.

Daniel Guhr, PhD

Academic Performance Consultant & School Volunteer

Shana has our votes!! Our three children went through PAUSD and we are long-time residents of Palo Alto. We KNOW Shana is a very hard working dedicated woman, in everything she undertakes. We have known her since she was five years old. She has good character and integrity. Shana will be a fantastic School Board member. She knows our community well!!!! I think being a long time member of our Community, as well as a teacher and School Consultant, is invaluable.

Deborah and Fred Kurland

Retired Social Worker; Parent of 3 PAUSD Alums

Shana brings a perfect and much-needed trifecta to the PAUSD school board - her experience and perspective as a teacher, PAUSD parent, and alum. Shana clearly is the right choice to help ensure we meet the needs of all our students!
